【在メルボルン日本領事羽田恵子さんのスピーチ】

歓迎集会に参加いただいた在メルボルン日本国領事羽田さんのスピーチを紹介させていただきます。

Principal, Ms Cath Dillon,
Deputy Principal of Seirei High School, Mr. Yasunari Sugiura,
Deputy Principal, Mr Steven Mifsud,
Mr Takahiro Hayashi,
Teachers,
Students,

Good morning.

It gives me great pleasure to say a few words at today’s assembly at Mount St. Joseph Girls’ College, and thank you for inviting me.

It is always my pleasure to meet Australian students. And I am especially happy today to meet Seirei High School students visiting from Japan and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sister school relationship. In this significant moment I would like to congratulate both schools on your achievements through your long-term friendship.

As the Consul-General of Japan in Melbourne, I highly value the promotion of sister city and sister school relationships, where we can learn from each other.

As a pioneer on this front, I hope the sister school relationship between Mount St. Joseph Girls’ College and Seirei High School will continue for many years to come and you can share your experience with other schools.

There are many frameworks within which you can continue your study in Japan. The Japanese government offers various scholarships to study in Japan. We also offer an opportunity to teach English as an assistant teacher in Japan on the JET Programme. I just saw 26 young Victorians off to Japan last week to participate in this year’s JET Programme.

You have many reasons why you should be in contact with Japan and one of them is the Tokyo Olympics Games. I hope that you will be prepared for a visit to Japan in 2020 if not earlier.

Lastly, I would like to mention that the sister state relationship between Victoria and Aichi is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and the sister city relationship between Hobsons Bay and Anjo in Aichi is in its 27th year. It’s wonderful to see that there is great strength in the many bridges connecting Australia and Japan.

Congratulations again on today’s special occasion. I hope the Seirei High School students will enjoy the stay in Melbourne and share Japanese culture with the Mount St Joseph Girls’ College students.

Thank you.
